After many years of waiting we can finally have a glance at the upcoming science-fiction film of director James Cameron.
Avatar takes place in the future on a distant planet called Pandora where the main character, war-veteran Jake, meets the local humanoid race he only knows as the Na’vi. The Na’vi are a bit taller than humans, they have blue skin and their ears are deer-like. Avatars represent the link between the planet and the humans – without them (robots?) they would not able to breathe the air on the planet. The trailer – released last week – also reveals that Jake undergoes an operation and as a result of that he turns into a Na’vi. The approximately 2-minute long trailer is full of action-packed, CGI sequences with monsters, robots, Na’vi and soldiers fighting one another; at this moment it is a bit difficult to tell who is on who’s side and what exactly the plot is behind the events.
Avatar is the first film of Mr Cameron more than ten years after his successful movie Titanic. It is said that Cameron wanted to make this movie right after he’d finished Titanic; however, the technology was not ready for showing what he’d imagined. Avatar could have been made at the end of the ‘90s, but it would have required more than 400 million dollars funding. No company wanted to make such an investment in the movie industry. So, finally, ten years later Cameron took it off from the shelves and officially announced that the production had begun around 2005.
A new digital 3D camera system was used to make Avatar. Mr Cameron intends to use this system for his next movie, Battle Angel, right after he finished Avatar. Avatar is said to be consisting of 40% live-action and 60% digitally made scenes and it costs 300 million dollar. The main character is played by Australian actor Sam Worthington who the audience already saw in a sci-fi, Terminator: The Salvation during the summertime this year. Avatar is expected to be released in December, till that time, watch the trailer! I dropped my teeth, what about you?
